DESCRIPTION:A granular material forms a distinct and fascinating phase in
physics -- sand acts as a fluid as grains flow through your fingers\, the
fallen grains form a solid heap on the floor or may suspend in the wind li
ke a gas. The continuous interaction between the different phases in granu
lar flows creates a complicated material that cannot be characterized by s
imple fluid or solid mechanics.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present cutting-e
dge experimental research done on granular flows in DAMTP. We will look at
avalanches and granular size segregation\, at different scales\, with the
help of table-top and laboratory experiments done in the GK Batchelor Lab
 oratory.
