DESCRIPTION:Modes of design structured by digital media such as simulation
 s\, numerically controlled machines and digital networks elicit increasing
 ly collective\, digitally mediated and distributed processes. Daniel Cardo
 so Llach will situate this contemporary condition by offering an intellect
 ual genealogy of twentieth century computational design systems linking po
 stwar anxieties and cybernetic utopias with contemporary discourses about 
 design in architecture and other fields. Reflecting on the material and so
 cial histories of the US Air Force-funded numerical control and Computer-A
 ided Design projects at MIT\, the lecture will shed light onto present des
 ign technologies\, casting them critically as cultural infrastructures –
  not merely tools – shaping new forms of representing\, organizing and i
 magining the built environment.
