DESCRIPTION:John Newton will describe current approaches to the use of pop
ulation data by Public Health England (PHE) to support its functions. This
will include a brief overview of some routine surveillance and other outp
uts but a more detailed discussion of the use of the Global Burden of Dise
ase (GBD) estimates for England. The GBD project is a major international
collaboration that aims to quantify health loss in a detailed but comprehe
nsive and useful way across the world and in individual countries. Collect
ed and analysed by a consortium of more than 1\,800 researchers in more th
an 120 countries\, the data capture premature death and disability from mo
re than 300 diseases and injuries in 188 countries\, by age and sex\, from
1990 to the present\, allowing comparisons over time\, across age groups\
, and among populations. John will describe how PHE has contributed to t
he GBD project and how the outputs have been used in England. He will als
o mention other international projects including the recently founded WHO
Euro Burden of Disease Network. John would be keen to hear from members o
