DESCRIPTION:Dr Fitzgerald’s talk will cover:\n\n• Building energy usag
e:\nthe role of the built environment in carbon emissions and how signific
ant the impact of a ‘low energy’ building can be.\n\n• Traditional n
atural ventilation:advantages and disadvantages of traditional natural ven
tilation\, its impact on thermal comfort and well-being \n\n• Examples o
f natural ventilation: case studies showing examples of naturally ventilat
ed buildings\, their successes and what can be learned from them.\n\n• D
esigning natural ventilation: exploration of the different modes of ventil
ation that can occur in more complex buildings and how these can be modell
ed and predicted\; simple spaces vs. complex spaces\; modelling techniques
including water bath videos and computational fluid dynamics \n\n• Natu
ral ventilation strategies: interrogating the traditional approach to natu
ral ventilation\, its pitfalls and explaining how to use different strateg
ies at different times of the year\; displacement ventilation\; mixing ven
tilation.\n\n• Energy savings: discussing the energy savings possible by
using data from monitored completed projects \n\n• Case studies: differ
ent systems in various building types\; system types and controls.\n
