DESCRIPTION:Novel information is often remembered in relation to one’s e
xisting world knowledge or schema. It is well known that our memory is bet
ter for information highly congruent with existing schemas but recent work
also proposes a memory advantage when novel information conflicts with pr
e-existing knowledge\, i.e.\, causing prediction errors (PE). I will prese
nt a series of behavioural and neuroimaging studies that investigate the m
echanisms by which schemas influence different types of memory in humans a
nd discuss the findings in the context of other memory theories.
