DESCRIPTION:Dynamic resource scheduling is key to achieve dependable servi
ce\nguarantees\, allocate spare capacity and protect systems against\nmisu
se. For network traffic in a cloud environment\, packet scheduling\nis oft
en done in software\, a task made hard by the extremely high\nfrequency of
decisions (10+ million packets per second) and the\nlarge number of concu
rrent sources.\n\nNo currently available solution simultaneously supports
high\ndecision rates\, scales to many concurrent clients\, and has provabl
e\,\nsmall deviation from ideal allocation at high link utilization.\nThe
pieces to make the above possible do exist\, though\, from efficient\nsche
dulers with tight analytical service guarantees to fast packet\nI/O framew
orks.\n\nIn this talk we fill the gap and propose an architecture to run\n
software packet schedulers efficiently even in a high speed\, highly\nconc
urrent environment. We achieve this result by separating the\nscheduling
decision from the actual packet transmission\, so that\nthe latter can be
performed in parallel by clients. We provide\nanalytical bounds on the se
rvice guarantees of our scheduling\narchitecture even at high link utiliza
tion\, and present an accurate\ndiscussion of implementation issues. Our
prototype can make over\n20 million scheduling decisions per second even w
ith tens of\nconcurrent clients running on a multi-core\, multi-socket sys
tem\,\nwhile adding less than 2 us to the communication delay.\n\nPAPER:
