SUMMARY:Unikernels and Beyond: the future of application containers in the
cloud - Dan Williams (IBM Research\, Yorktown Heights\, NY)

DESCRIPTION:As applications\, rather than systems\, increasingly become th
e unit of\nexecution on the cloud\, it is unclear what the application abs
traction\non the cloud should be. Recently\, unikernels have emerged as a
n\nexploration of minimalist software stacks to improve the security of\na
pplications in the cloud among other benefits. I will begin the talk\nby
giving an overview of unikernel-related work at IBM Research. I\nwill the
n describe our work on "unikernel monitors" that extends the\nnotion of mi
nimalism beyond an individual virtual machine to include\nthe underlying m
onitor and the interface it exposes. Each unikernel\nis bundled with a ti
ny\, specialized monitor that only contains what\nthe unikernel needs both
in terms of interface and implementation.\nUnikernel monitors improve iso
lation through minimal interfaces\,\nreduce complexity\, and boot unikerne
ls quickly. I will also describe\nour initial prototype and our experienc
e engaging with the open source\ncommunity. I will end by sketching some
future work.\n\nBio:\nDan Williams is a Research Staff Member at IBM Resea
rch\, Yorktown\nHeights\, NY\, where he has been looking at what applicati
ons running in\nthe cloud should look like. Specifically\, he's intereste
 d in\nunikernel architectures\, especially the interface between the\nunik
ernel and the host. He's an original author of the Solo5\nunikernel base
(which will soon be an official backend for MirageOS on\nKVM) and the ukvm
"unikernel monitor". Prior to IBM Research\, he\nreceived his Ph.D. from
  Cornell University.
