DESCRIPTION:The relationship between crystal orientations in polycrystalli
ne materials influences many macroscopic properties including plastic defo
rmation and phase transitions. This talk considers the geometry of crystal
orientations with special attention paid to crystal symmetry. In particul
ar\, the geometry of the space of misorientations between orientations wit
h arbitrary crystal symmetry will be discussed. It will be shown that impo
rtant orientation relationships can be interpreted as vertices in misorien
tation space. From the geometry of the misorientation spaces we deduce for
mulas for the uncorrelated angle and axis distribution functions for any c
ombination of symmetries.\n\nThe talk will be illustrated by visualization
s generated with the texture analysis toolbox MTEX and will include and in
troduction to the toolbox. MTEX is a universal\, free and open souce MATLA
B toolbox for analyzing crystallographic orientation data. It provides bas
ic functionalities to compute with orientations\, misorientations\, pole f
 igure data\, EBSD data\, distribution functions\, tensorial properties\, e
lastic and plastic deformations. MTEX is highly extendable and everybody i
 s welcome to contribute code.
