SUMMARY: Hot Rocks Under Our Feet\; Seismic Imaging of Igneous Geology in
Sedimentary Basins - Prof. Christopher Jackson\, Imperial

DESCRIPTION:Volcanoes are hot\, loud and scary\, thus we know little of th
eir internal structure\, or that of their underlying\, dyke- and sill-domi
nated 'plumbing systems'. Magma intrusion in the Earth's crust and the ext
rusion of this material on its surface represent a natural hazard\; howeve
r\, these processes can also result in the formation of economic quantitie
s of hydrocarbons. In this talk I will show how 3D seismic reflection data
can illuminate the structure and emplacement mechanics of these 'hot rock
s'. I will also demonstrate the key role igneous processes and products pl
ay in the development of petroleum systems on continental margins.\n\n\nAl
l welcome to attend\, free for members of the Sedgwick Club\, £2 for non-
 members. Refreshments provided!
