DESCRIPTION:In tissues\, growth and survival of cells depends on relative
fitness levels. The\nstrongest cells are selected while the less fit cells
are eliminated through a\nprocess known as cell competition. We have rece
ntly shown that in the adult\nDrosophila posterior midgut growing tumors u
se cell competition to kill surrounding\ncells and cause host tissue attri
tion. Inhibition of cell competition prevents\nadenoma growth\, indicating
that it is an essential driver of tumor growth in this\ntissue. This talk
will highlight our findings in the fly model and our current\nadvances in
the development of mammalian models for cell competition.
