DESCRIPTION:John Britton was a prolific author\, editor and publisher of i
llustrated works on the landscape and architecture in nineteenth century B
ritain\, subjects he encompassed in a reformed vision of topography\, conc
erned with modernity as well as antiquity\, and designed to appeal to a wi
dening reading public. Britton was also a founder member of the Royal Geog
raphical Society and a number of institutions dedicated to the ‘diffusio
n of knowledge’. This paper addresses some of Britton’s graphic works\
, particularly on cities\, notably a display map of London and a panorama
of Bristol\, in terms of wider movements for cultural reform.
