DESCRIPTION:The likelihood ratio has many advocates amongst forensic stati
sticians as the best way to evaluate evidence. Its use often requires tra
ining data from populations whose relevance to the issue at trial is dete
rmined by propositions put forward by the prosecution and defence in a cr
iminal trial. The choice of these populations and the choice of the sampl
ing of data from them are two reasons for the courts to query an approach
to evidence evaluation based on the likelihood ratio. Consideration of t
hese choices will be discussed in the context of recent work on the evalu
ation of evidence of the quantities of cocaine on banknotes in drug-relat
 ed crimes.
