DESCRIPTION:The violation of lepton number is predicted in many new physic
s scenarios and it is tightly connected to the\npotential Majorana charact
er of neutrinos\; searching for lepton number violation (LNV) therefore co
nstitutes a\ncrucial pathway to physics beyond the Standard Model. In my t
alk\, I will provide an overview of recent theoretical \ndevelopments of L
NV and Majorana neutrinos. I will try to illuminate what consequences the
observation of LNV \nwould have on new physics scenarios\, specifically on
neutrino mass and baryogenesis mechanisms. I will furthermore \nsurvey th
e phenomenology of relevant experimental searches\, both at low energies a
nd at high energy colliders such \nas the LHC. Here I will focus on the ro
le of the nuclear process of neutrinoless double beta decay and its impact
  on\nneutrino physics.\n
