DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered how a graduate can enter the world of consulting
having never worked a single day in Industry? How can someone find improv
ements and better ways of doing things in a company if they’ve never wor
ked in that sector?\nThese questions stumped Tim Murray and Kat Suddaby du
ring their final years of chemical engineering at Cambridge. They were bom
barded by several consulting firms looking to recruit them and their class
mates\, but never quite understood what any of them really did. Surely man
agement consultants spent their days locked in broom cupboards on client s
ites\, crunching numbers on laptops\, working until 11pm not speaking to a
nyone. Within two years surely you’d become extremely unhappy\, and fina
lly you’d be put out of your misery by the compulsory 2 year cull? Right
?! With some firms maybe\, but it doesn’t always have to be that way.\nT
im and Kat\, both alumni of the CEB department\, will be talking about the
ir experiences since joining Newton\, and giving you an insight on what li
fe is really like at Glassdoor and FT’s #1 ranked Consulting Companies t
o Work For in 2016/17.\nNewton is a team of award-winning consultants who
solve complex challenges and change organisations for the better. In her f
irst year at Newton\, Becky worked with an NHS trust to annually enable 5\
,800 more patients to be seen in clinics\, release 80\,000 clinical hours
and save £2.8m. Tom left university three years ago and has helped ensure
low income families can afford fresh fruit and veg\, protected the jobs o
f 4\,500 workers and taken 1\,500 lorries off the road.\nSince being found
ed in 2001 by three Cambridge alumni\, we have averaged 35% growth every y
ear. This means you’ll develop fast\, delivering change on a range of co
mplex assignments across the public and private sectors\, from healthcare
 to defence\, local government\, grocery\, manufacturing\, transport and ut
ilities.\nWe’re different. Not just in the way we do business but in the
people we hire and the lengths we go to support you to succeed. So much s
o\, we put 100% of our fees at risk to deliver guaranteed results.\n\nTim
(Pembroke\, 2004) is an Associate Director and has been with Newton since
graduating from the Chem Eng Department 8 years ago. During his career\, T
im has experience across a wide range of industries including: Chemicals\,
  Retail\, Consumer Goods\, Healthcare\, Defence\, Property Services and Lo
cal Government. One of Tim’s proudest achievements was leading a program
me with one of the UK's most forward thinking engineering companies to dou
ble the output of their flagship product\, resulting in a 20% increase in
the group's profits. Currently Tim is leading a team of 30 consultants to
improve the availability and quality of fresh goods at one of the UK’s l
argest supermarkets. Outside of work Tim is keen sportsman. He played tenn
is and cricket for the University but these days is just as likely to be f
ound running along the banks of the Mersey near his home in Manchester.\nK
at (Pembroke\, 2009) is a Senior Consultant at Newton. Following graduatio
n from CEB\, she took 9 months travelling around India and Africa before s
tarting in May 2015. Since joining she has worked on five projects across
two sectors\, including working with the largest county council in the UK
to meet the budget cuts without compromising quality of care for children
under 18 and taking cost out of the fresh produce supply chain into one of
the four large UK supermarkets. Kat is originally from Leeds\, and has si
nce moved back. In her spare time\, she can be found on her bike in the Yo
rkshire Dales\, swimming in a lake\, or travelling through a less well tra
 velled country.\n
