DESCRIPTION:Microscale structures provide convenient platforms for biomedi
cal imaging and sensing using optics. This seminar will describe platforms
that we are developing that span from basic research to patient monitorin
 g. We have combined quantum dots with microspheres to enhance AFM-based bi
o-mechanical studies. The system utilizes near-field optical phenomena to
study dynamics at the cell surface. We are also exploring the use of funct
ionalized red blood cells as a blood analyte sensing platform. The red blo
od cells are functionalized with optically active sensors and can be inter
 rogated through the skin.\n\n
