DESCRIPTION:Improving program performance using automatic tools has been t
he\nsubject of research stretching back to the dawn of high-level\nprogram
ming languages. For some\, it is the perfect research topic -\nalways room
for improvement. For others\, it is something that time and\nagain fails
to deliver. In this talk I will explore why compiler-based\ncode optimisat
ion has often failed to deliver. I will also look at\nways we can recast
compiler optimisation so that it can meet the\nchallenges of legacy\, para
 llelism and heterogeneity.\n\n
