DESCRIPTION:The Alexander polynomial is a classical (1923) invariant for k
nots and links\, and can be defined in a number of different\, elementary
ways. Link Floer homology is a less classical invariant for knots and link
s\, and ‘categorifies’ the Alexander polynomial. I will try to give on
e definition of the Alexander polynomial\, and hint at how one defines kno
t Floer homology and sees that it categorifies the Alexander polynomial. T
ime permitting\, I will discuss how we might ‘glue’ things together in
  both settings
