DESCRIPTION:Much social psychological research addresses people's subjecti
ve identification with various social groups. In this talk I will consider
individuals' performance of these identities. I will draw upon research p
ursued with Hindu pilgrims attending a north Indian pilgrimage event (the
Magh Mela) and with Scottish Muslim women. This work suggests the importan
ce of attending to the social factors that facilitate the enactment of soc
ial identities and to the consequences of such enactment for individuals'
 identification and identity-related behaviour.
