SUMMARY:Contacts and Fretting - Mechanics Colloquium - Prof David Hills\,
Department of Engineering Science\, University of Oxford

DESCRIPTION:Contact problems are important because all loads (except those
developed as body forces) are transmitted into components through contact
 s. As undergraduates we learn about the Hertz problem\, but there are man
y other kinds of contact\, and each has its own properties. In the semina
r we will look at some properties of the different kinds of contacts under
stood\, with particular reference to what happens when they carry cyclic s
hear forces\, and therefore undergo slip.
