DESCRIPTION:Fusion systems are constructions on $p$-groups which generalis
 e the action of a group acting on its Sylow $p$-subgroups via conjugation.
  We motivate this generalisation and the notion of saturation\, which pres
 erves properties of fusion of a group on a Sylow $p$-subgroup. We then foc
 us on $p$-groups that have an extraspecial subgroup of index $p$\, discuss
  the finite simple groups whose Sylow $p$-subgroups have this property\, a
 nd how the situation changes when we consider saturated fusion systems ove
 r the same $p$-groups\, presenting results which aim towards a classificat
 ion.
