SUMMARY:Quantum Effects in Biological Systems: using physics to solve biol
ogy and biology to solve physics. - Dr Alex Chin\, Winton Advanced Researc
h Fellow in the Physics of Sustainability

DESCRIPTION:Dr Chin works in the Cavendish Laboratory where he studies opt
imisation of light-harvesting in photosynthesis from a physicist's perspec
tive. Understanding the intricate non-classical processes\nunderlying biol
ogical phenomena can help optimise new nanotechnologies\, as well as provi
de new insight into the novel physics of systems at the border of the quan
tum and classical worlds. This talk covers some of the emerging ideas abou
t quantum effects in biology\, including the way that strategies learnt fr
om biological processes may be exploited to improve next-generation techno
logies\, such as organic photovoltaic devices.\n
