DESCRIPTION:Visual sensitivity is poor in infants and develops over months
or years after birth. Neuronal sensitivity in brain areas thought to be i
mportant for particular visual functions is surprisingly mature near birth
and reaches adult levels well in advance of behavioral sensitivity. There
fore\, information is available in the infant brain that is either not acc
essible to perception or is accessible but not being used. We will explore
potential explanations for the protracted course of functional developmen
 t.
