DESCRIPTION:The title refers to an asymptotic invariant of a pair (G\, U) 
 consisting of a group G and a commensurated subgroup U < G such that G is 
 generated by finitely many cosets of U. The goal of the talk is to introdu
 ce this invariant\, discuss examples and present the first results of its 
 investigation. This is based on joint work with Colin Reid and Phillip Wes
 olek.
