DESCRIPTION:Popular science writer and mathematician\, Professor Ian Stewa
rt\, joins us to discuss the mathematics behind homeostasis. Working joint
ly with Marty Golubistky\, (comma) he studied thermoregulation in opossums
to establish a link between Thom-Zeeman catastrophe theory and homeostasi
 s. Later\, working with Mike Reed\, Janet Best and Fred Niihout\, he has r
evealed a second mathematical context for homeostasis as well. Professor S
tewart will report on what we know so far.\n \nIan Stewart is an Emeritus
Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick\, and a successful p
opular-science and science-fiction writer. He has won numerous awards for
his work\, including the Michael Faraday Medal and he was the first recipi
ent of the Christopher Zeeman Medal\, awarded jointly by the LMS and the I
MA for his work on promoting mathematics.\n
