DESCRIPTION:My fluids talk two years ago had the following aim: "to demons
trate successes and limitations of linear stability theory in assessing th
e nonlinear behavior of some real unstable flows in comparison to experime
nts and DNS".\nThe present talk can be seen as a continuation of this them
 e. We will look at flows which are more challenging to characterize\, and
I will present ways in which linear stability and sensitivity analysis can
(and cannot) provide information about the flow. An example is the transi
tion and rich nonlinear dynamics of the flow in a constricted pipe (stenot
ic flow)\, and its extreme sensitivity to asymmetry. Furthermore\, we will
see how a controversial mean flow stability analysis yields accurate eige
nmodes and oscillation frequencies in a swirling turbulent flow in a fuel
injector geometry. These eigenmodes can be used to perform sensitivity ana
lysis. I will show how sensitivity analysis may identify which parts of th
e flow in a complex geometry need to be altered in order to change its hyd
 rodynamic stability characteristics.
