DESCRIPTION:This talk summarises a summer project I did at Caltech in the
astrophysics department\, but\ndon’t worry - the talk will assume no kno
wledge of physics. I will discuss scaling laws for turbulent\ndiffusion in
the interstellar medium (the space between star systems) and why (astro)p
hysicists care\nabout such things. The main exploration is whether we can
model such diffusion processes in the\nFourier domain as a Levy flight (ra
ndom walk in which the step-lengths have a heavy-tailed\nprobability distr
ibution). Can we measure some sort of ‘diffusion’ in the Fourier domai
n? I will test\nsuggestive theoretical scalings with state of the art nume
rical simulations run on XSEDE (a big\nsupercomputer) and some analysis in
the Fourier domain. The evidence suggests one can measure\nsuch a diffusi
on and I will discuss the implications of this. The talk contains some Fou
rier analysis\,\nnumerical analysis and a pinch of probability.
