DESCRIPTION:Contrast Variation Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) has p
rovided important insights into the biogenesis of membrane proteins in Gra
m-negative bacteria. Their cell envelope consists of two membranes\, which
differ with respect to their lipid composition\, but also in the structur
e of their integral membrane proteins. Importantly\, the latter are synthe
sised in the cytoplasm and therefore have to be transported to their corre
ct membrane. SANS analysis of integral membrane translocons and soluble ch
aperones involved in this process have clarified the molecular basis of bi
ological function\, as well as revealed unexpected conserved mechanisms pr
 esent in eukaryotic organisms.\n
