DESCRIPTION:I will give some examples of ways in which mathematical and st
atistical issues relevant to Forensic Science have arisen during my seven
years as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Home Office\, and also reflect
more widely on the role of a scientist appointed to this role in Governme
nt. Some of the aspects of my 2011 report into research into Forensic Sci
ence remain relevant today and indeed pose challenges for all the partici
pants in this conference. I hope that my talk will also be an opportunity
to thank the Newton Institute for playing its part\, alongside other nat
ional and international research organisations\, in raising the profile o
 f this important discipline.
