 artin Roland is Emeritus Professor of Health Services Research at the Univ
 ersity of Cambridge having previously been RAND Professor of Health Servic
 es Research from 2009 to 2016. He was Professor of General Practice at the
  University of Manchester from 1992 to 2009\, and he practised as a GP for
  35 years. He was appointed CBE in 2003 for Services to Medicine. Througho
 ut his career he has carried out research designed to improve healthcare i
 n this country and abroad. He has contributed to numerous NHS committees a
 nd advised successive governments on primary care policy. He is therefore 
 particularly well placed to comment on the past\, present and future of th
 e NHS\, both from the point of view of an academic and as a practising doc
 tor.
