DESCRIPTION:The seminar will present two areas of investigation that have
led to the\ndevelopment of features for future Navigation systems. We have
concentrated\non the application to road vehicle users\, but some of the
techniques may be\nmore generally useful.\n\nThe first investigation looke
d at what might be possible if all navigation\nunits kept a complete log o
f their movements. This led to the development of\nroute planners that tak
e into account the familiarity of the user with\nparticular route segments
\, navigation aids that operate without user input\nby predicting future b
ehaviour from past traces\, and desktop applications\nthat can use the veh
icle history to correlate many types of object by\nlocation.\n\nThe second
investigation looked at finding a "good set of routes" from one\nplace to
another. The set is hard to define mathematically\, but we\ninformally re
fer to this when we say "you could go this way\, or that way\, or\neven vi
a there". Can we find an algorithm that will generate the good\nalternativ
e routes that an expert navigator might consider\, and how would we\nprese
 nt these to the user?\n\n
