DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, Dr. Juergen Rauleder from the Technical Univ
ersity of Munich will give an overview of the research being done in his r
otorcraft aeromechanics group. Specifically\, three topics of current inte
rest are introduced and recent results being shown: A.) Combined computati
onal/experimental analyses of the aeromechanics of high-speed\, high-advan
 ce-ratio coaxial rotor systems\, B.) Model development of a real-time- cap
able\, coupled fluid dynamics/flight mechanics simulation in arbitrary (no
t known a priori) flow environments for pilot training in challenging oper
ations such as landing on ship decks or oil rigs and flight in offshore wi
nd farms\, C.) CFD simulations and experiments on passive flow control at
rotor blade tips to accelerate diffusion of the tip vortices for noise red
uction and alleviation of detrimental induced and vibratory effects. \n\nS
hort bio: Dr. Juergen Rauleder is heading the rotorcraft aeromechanics res
earch group at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Dr. Rauleder hold
s a Master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Stut
tgart\, Germany\, and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering with a focus on rot
orcraft aerodynamics from the University of Maryland\, USA. He worked at t
he Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center at the University of Maryland as a visi
ting scholar and as a graduate research assistant in the rotorcraft aerody
namics laboratory of Prof. Gordon Leishman. Since 2014\, Dr. Rauleder lead
s the rotorcraft aerodynamics and dynamics efforts at the Institute of Hel
icopter Technology at TUM\, where he also teaches two Master’s classes i
n helicopter aerodynamics (fundamentals and advanced topics). His experime
ntal and computational research interests are the applied rotor aerodynami
cs and dynamics with a focus on aeromechanical interactions\, rotor wake a
nd blade aerodynamics\, and vortex flows. Dr. Rauleder is a member of the
AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Committee and the Aerodynamics Committee of the
 American Helicopter Society.\n
