DESCRIPTION:The "fuzzball proposal" suggests that "microstate geometries"
provide a classical\, microscopic description of black holes. However\, re
cent numerical and heuristic work indicates that they might be classically
unstable\, and this is now supported by several rigorous results. Overall
\, these results show that linear waves on microstate geometries behave ve
ry strangely indeed: despite avoiding the "Friedman instability"\, they de
cay extremely slowly - even slower than could be achieved by any arrangeme
nt of mirrors in Minkowski space! Additionally\, the presence of an "evane
scent ergoregion" can lead to an arbitrarily large amplification of waves\
, despite the presence of a globally causal Killing vector field. Altogeth
er\, these results are indicative of a nonlinear instability.
