DESCRIPTION:A growing demand for enantio-pure chemicals in bio-technologie
s and drug manufacturing makes enantio-selective heterogeneous catalysts h
ighly desirable. As a consequence\, the last decade has seen a dramatic in
crease in research into chiral surface systems. Achiral surfaces can be mo
dified with chiral organic molecules to create enantio-selective reaction
environments. We use synchrotron-based spectroscopies\, such as XPS and NE
XAFS\, alongside LEED and temperature-programmed desorption to characteriz
e the thermal stability\, bond coordination and orientation of modifier mo
lecules on achiral and intrinsically chiral model catalyst surfaces. The t
alk will concentrate on small chiral amino acids (e.g. alanine\, serine) o
 n Cu and Ni surfaces.
