DESCRIPTION:The eye has proven to be an excellent target organ for gene th
erapy. Vision loss in patients due to retinal degeneration can result fro
m mutations in a large number of genes and there are now several clinical
trials of gene therapy to treat some of these conditions. Comparable condi
tions due to spontaneous mutations in some of the orthologous genes have b
een identified in companion animal species such as dog and cat. Retinal ge
ne therapy in some of these large animal models has been key in the precli
nical development necessary prior to clinical trials.
