DESCRIPTION:The solar chromosphere requires a local heat input of around 1
0^7 erg/s/cm^2. It is also permeated by jets of cool dense meter which ris
e into the corona - spicules. This talk will explain what the problem is a
nd present a model which aims to answer both of these problems. The model
is based a Alfvén wave driving of an expanding flux tube which gives the
correct heating rate and rise speed for spicule-like structures. The talk
will end with a clear and detailed discussion of the limitations of the mo
del and the prospects for these to be be overcome\, giving a definitive an
swer\, in the next few years.
