DESCRIPTION:A bacterial bath is a fascinating example of an active suspens
ion\nwhere the forcing of the fluid microstructure drives larger-scale\ndy
namics in space and time. In joint work with David Saintillan\, we\nhave
adapted numerical tools for studying rigid rod suspensions to\nstudying th
e dynamics of suspensions of self-locomoting rods. Through\nour simulatio
ns we demonstrate the instability of large-scale\norientational ordering (
predicted theoretically by Ramaswamy and\nSinha)\, the persistence of shor
t-range order\, study the role\nof Taylor dispersion in this system\, and
examine some of the effects\nof boundary conditions and differing swimmer
models. If time permits\nI will also discuss recent work on the effect of
fluid visco-elasticity\non the locomotion of an undulatory sheet.
