DESCRIPTION:In seeking possible applications of holography to real materia
ls the\nthermoelectric conductivity is an important observable to study. L
ike the entropy\nwe explain how the DC conductivity can be obtained from t
he behaviour of\nblack hole spacetimes purely at the horizon. More precise
ly\, we show that the DC\nconductivity can be obtained by solving a genera
lised set of Navier-Stokes\nequations for a fluid living on the black hole
horizon. Unlike other connections\nbetween fluids and black holes\, this
is an exact result and and can be viewed as a precise manifestation \nof t
he old membrane paradigm for black holes in holography.\nWe also show that
CFTs (not just holographic) with spatially periodic\ntemperature gradient
s and strains can exhibit the novel phenomenon of thermal\nbackflow\, in w
hich heat currents locally flow in the opposite direction to that\nof an a
 pplied DC source.
