DESCRIPTION:I will present work on the potential for transient growth in t
 he linear perturbation of current sheets. The non-normal character of resi
 stive MHD allows for transient growth that is excluded in the standard nor
 mal-mode analysis. If transient effects can sufficiently change the rate o
 f energy growth at the onset of the tearing instability\, a much faster ev
 olution may be possible. This result could have important consequences for
  flares and the onset of eruptive solar phenomena\, such as coronal mass e
 jections.
