DESCRIPTION:Trains\, buses\, taxis\, cars\, deliveries. These exist in thr
ee networks\nsimultaneously: the physical network of roads and train lines
\, the\ndata network of sensing and analytics and control\, and the social
\nnetwork of people who make use of them.\n\nI will tell the story of a da
ta science startup\, where my colleagues\nand I spent five years making se
nse of these networks. We started with\nincentive schemes\, paying and per
suading commuters to shift their\nhabits. We moved on to dashboards and fu
ll-resolution reconstruction\nof the transit network\, to see where there
was congestion and whom we\nneeded to target. We built a new type of datab
ase\, for rich and\nhigh-speed processing of spacetime data\; and we desig
ned a visual\nquerying language to make the system accessible to urban pla
nners and\ntransit agencies. And\, in the end\, we joined the Google Maps
team.\n\nWe learnt some hard lessons about how to interact with data visua
lly\nand tangibly. I believe that over the next decade it will become easy
\nto understand and argue with big datasets\, as easy as Excel is today\;\
nand I will discuss the way ahead.
