 occupation in August 1944 with hopes for its final liberation. The Warsaw 
 Uprising became the most intense and tragic of the revolts organised again
 st the Germans in occupied Europe. In two months of fighting and mass murd
 er\, about 17\,000 insurgents and over 200\,000 civilians were killed. The
  Nazis destroyed nearly 90 percent of the city\, leaving Warsaw a sea of r
