DESCRIPTION:The discovery of melanopsin\, a new photoreceptor in the mamma
lian retina\, has revolutionized our understanding of how changes in backg
round light intensity are measured to drive sub-conscious responses such a
s circadian photoentrainment. Here\, I will discuss our recent work that a
ddresses how melanopsin might also be important in more conventional visua
l tasks\, such as the detection of spatial patterns\, in the mouse early v
 isual system.
