DESCRIPTION:In order to prevent the possibility of transmission of the por
cine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) from pigs to humans during clinical xeno
transplantation\, we are investigating the potential for recombination of
defective PERV in pigs that might lead to the re-creation of replication c
ompetent viruses capable of infecting human cells. We also aim to establis
h an extra level of safety within the clinical application of xenotranspla
ntation\, by investigating previously proven and novel molecular methods t
owards inhibiting PERV viral expression in the transplanted porcine tissue
