DESCRIPTION:Confronting data from current and forthcoming cosmological sur
veys with theory requires an accurate understanding of non-linear gravitat
ional evolution. Computer simulations are a vital tool for generating and
testing this understanding\, but suffer from a number of shortcomings. For
example\, the finite CPU time available generates a tension between the n
eed for large volumes and for high resolution. Additionally\, simulations
essentially operate as a “black box”\, generating only modest insight
into the actual physics determining the non-linear clustering. I will disc
uss these shortcomings and show several new techniques designed to mitigat
e them\, based on controlled modifications to the initial realisation of t
he linear gaussian random overdensity field. (This talk will be based on a
rXiv:1511.04090\, arXiv:1603.05253 and will touch briefly on arXiv:1607.02
 507)
