SUMMARY:Trade unions and the British tradition of pluralism - Dr Alastair
 Reid (Fellow\, Girton College)
DTSTART:20170124T174500Z
DTEND:20170124T191500Z
UID:TALK70129@talks.cam.ac.uk
CONTACT:Dr Rachel E. Holmes
DESCRIPTION:In contrast to the usual assumption that trade unions were the
product of capitalism and industrialisation\, this talk traces their orig
ins back to the pre-industrial craft guilds. A liberal-pluralist view of t
rade unions is then outlined\, advocating collective organisation and coll
ective bargaining as ends in themselves rather than stepping stones to sta
 te-socialism.
