DESCRIPTION:What is the link between caldera collapses and large volume la
va eruptions? The first detailed observations of such coupled activity are
from the 2014-2015 volcano-tectonic episode in the Bardarbunga volcanic s
ystem in Iceland\, which occurred during the European FUTUREVOLC volcano s
upersite project. Bardarbunga is a subglacial basaltic caldera volcano und
er the Vatnajökull ice cap above the center of the Icelandic hotspot\, wi
th an associated 150-km long fissure swarm. A major lava eruption occurred
in the Holuhraun plain north of Vatnajökull (about 1.5 km3) and a gradua
l caldera collapse of the ice covered Bárðarbunga caldera (about 65 m)\,
connected by a 50 km long dyke (about 0.5 km3) that formed mostly over 2-
4 weeks after the onset of activity on 16 August 2014. Interaction between
the pressure exerted by the subsiding reservoir roof and the physical pro
perties of the subsurface flow path explain observed gradual\, near-expone
ntial decline of both collapse rate and the intensity of the 180-day-long
 eruption.\n\nSigmundsson\, F.\, Hooper\, A. Hreinsdottir\, S.\, Vogfjord\,
