DESCRIPTION:II1 factors appear naturally from a multitude of data (groups\
 , group actions\, operations such as free products\, etc).&nbsp\;<br>This 
 leads to two types of&nbsp\;rigidity phenomena in this&nbsp\;framework: &n
 bsp\;<br>1. W*-rigidity\, aiming at recovering the building data from the 
 isomorphism class of the algebra.&nbsp\;<br>2. Restrictions on the symmetr
 ies of the II1 factor&nbsp\;(like the index of its subfactors).&nbsp\;<br>
 We will discuss some old and new results in this direction\, and the role 
 of deformation-rigidity techniques&nbsp\;<br>in obtaining them.&nbsp\;&nbs
 p\;<br>&nbsp\;&nbsp\;<br>&nbsp\;
