DESCRIPTION:The Athena X-ray mission will be ESA's next large observatory\
, conceived to\nexplore the hot and energetic Universe in the late 2020s.
Athena will\nconsist of a large effective area X-ray telescope\, with two
instruments on\nits focal plane (WFI and X-IFU) delivering sensitive wide-
field X-ray\nimaging\, timing and spatially resolved high-resolution spect
roscopy.  Its\nscience objectives focus on the dynamical\, thermal and ch
emical evolution of\nthe hot baryonic component of the Universe\, both in
clusters and in the\ngeneral warm and hot intergalactic medium\, as well o
n the physics the very\nenergetic phenomena around black holes\, ultimatel
y responsible for AGN\nfeedback on galaxy and cluster scales. In the late
2020s\, Athena will not\nwork in isolation\, but will be part of a set of
large observational\nfacilities across the electromagnetic spectrum (inclu
 ding ALMA\, E-ELT\, SKA\,\nCTA and others). In this colloquium\, I will pr
esent the Athena mission\nconcept\, the project status and its science obj
ectives\, with particular\nemphasis on the scientific synergies with these
other flagships\, and the\nunique science to be delivered.
