SUMMARY:Physical Manifestations of Evolution\, Regularity and Chaos In and
Around Our Galaxy - Kathryn Johnston (Columbia University)

DESCRIPTION:Our Galaxy is thought to be dynamically young with a fairly sm
ooth potential\ndominated by a nearly spherical dark matter halo that has
evolved little in\nthe last several billion years. These attributes broadl
y suggest that\npotential evolution and dynamical chaos should have neglig
ible influences on\nthe orbits of its constituent stars\, as well as on th
e stellar structures\nthey collectively support. This talk reviews some re
cent results which point\nto signatures of Galactic evolution and the chao
tic nature of stellar orbits\nthat can be (and have been) observed.
