DESCRIPTION:Mitochondria and ER have highly dynamic\, intricate and\ninter
acting morphologies. The contacts between these two organelles are\nvital
hubs of intracellular communication that influence the morphology of\nthe
mitochondria and mediate transfer of calcium and lipids. The\ncomponents o
f the contact sites and associated regulatory proteins are\nslowly being i
dentified but the biological relevance of these contacts for\nthe function
of tissues or whole organisms is still very poorly\nunderstood.\nIn neuro
ns the morphology of the mitochondria and ER are highly\nspecialised and v
ary across the different subcellular neuronal\ncompartments. Alterations i
n the dynamics and morphology of the ER and\nmitochondria in neurons are a
ssociated with many neurodegenerative\ndiseases. I am using larval motor n
eurons to explore the biological\nsignificance of the interplay of these t
wo organelles. I will present the\nmethodology I am using to investigate t
he dynamics of these organelles in\nvivo with an overview of my research i
nto how modulation of tethering\,\nmitochondrial morphology and calcium si
gnalling influence mitochondrial\ndynamics and transport in axons.
