DESCRIPTION:The Internet has never been a more critical piece of infrastru
cture. It has also never been more complicated. Keeping this infrastructur
e up and running requires tracking the state of an inherently dynamic netw
ork over time. At ThousandEyes\, we continuously sample the Internet from
servers across the globe. This talk explores our data on some recent major
Internet outages\, how we detected them\, and what technologies and infra
structure we use to process and present this data in near real time. \n\nB
io: Michael Meisel leads the engineering team at ThousandEyes and is respo
nsible for the development of the ThousandEyes platform. He’s obsessed w
ith usability\, network protocols\, and large systems of all kinds. Michae
l received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA\, where he worked in th
e Internet Research Lab and designed a protocol framework for multi-hop wi
reless networks. Previously\, Michael was the Senior Software Engineer at
non-profit Inveneo\, where he developed an embedded Linux distribution usa
ble by novices and built solar-powered\, rural computer labs and wireless
 networks in east Africa.\n
